Im Jura-Studium wird der Fokus auf die Auseinandersetzung mit dem geltenden Recht gelegt. Studierende beschäftigen sich zudem mit dem Ursprung von Verordnungen und Gesetzen sowie der Unterteilung in Öffentliches Recht und Privatrecht. Angehenden Juristinnen und Juristen wird unter anderem Kenntnis in Rechtsgebieten oder Studienrichtungen wie Strafrecht, Zivilrecht, Verwaltungsrecht oder Wirtschaftsrecht vermittelt. Als Abschluss sind vor allem Bachelor und Master an einer Universität oder Fachhochschule sehr beliebt.

What are the main areas of study?

In the legal studies program, you will learn the basic knowledge and legal methodology that are essential for working in the field of law. You will learn the basics of private law and public law. Depending on the educational institution, mandatory modules are added, such as legal history, international and European law, or business law. The study program is often strongly theory-oriented.

How long does it take to study law?

Depending on the field of study or type of school, the length of study differs. The bachelor's degree can be completed full-time or part-time model and lasts between 6-8 semesters. Afterwards, it is possible to follow a Master's program, which takes another 2-4 semesters. For a bachelor's degree there are basically 180 ECTS, for a master's degree normally 90 ECTS. Start of studies is usually in the fall semester but also possible in the spring semester.

How much does the education cost?

A bachelor's degree or master's degree costs between 4,500 -8,000 francs, depending on the college and university and duration. At a higher technical college between 10'000 - 50'000.- francs, again depending on the course of education. The differences are shown to you here. 

What are the admission requirements for an education in law?

Law graduates must be able to formulate and argue logically, both orally and in writing. It is also important to have an interest in economic, political and social issues. Depending on the schools, admission requirements vary and a few years of professional experience in a legal field is required or an aptitude test is taken. 

What career options do I have after graduation?

Law school graduates usually work in law firms, courts, and prosecutors' offices. An internship can positively influence entry into the profession and career opportunities and is recommended.

The salary: In Switzerland, a salary between 87,000 and 132,000 francs is possible as a lawyer, of course this varies depending on the industry, degree and position. You can find potential employers here.

University of Applied Sciences vs. University: Law studies are offered at UNIBAS Basel, FFHS Brig, UNILU Luzern, and HSG St.Gallen, among others, at the respective faculties.
