Nursing and Nursing Science

Nursing specialists work in hospitals, psychiatric clinics, retirement and nursing homes or care for patients according to the care they need. As a nurse, you represent the interests of patients, build a relationship of trust with patients and ensure a smooth exchange of information. In addition, as a team worker, you actively participate in an interdisciplinary team. Nurses bear professional responsibility throughout the entire nursing process. In Switzerland, there are a variety of continuing education programs in the field of nursing.

What are the focal points?

In most continuing education programs, the curriculum includes the following modules: basic science, nursing as a science, nursing process, nursing specific age and patient groups, and nursing techniques. In addition, you learn to perceive the interdisciplinary context in nursing and to take on challenging tasks in nursing. In most cases, students can choose between several specializations within the modules. Depending on the place of training, the modules may differ.

How long does the continuing education?

If you complete your continuing education at a HF, it usually takes 3 years for full-time study. Should you complete your continuing education part-time, it will take 3-4 years.

If you are studying for a bachelor's degree, you should expect it to take 6 semesters.

How much does continuing education cost?

The cost of attending a college of higher education or an education center ranges from 10,000 to 50,000 francs.

When studying at a university of applied sciences, the cost is about 800 francs per semester

What are the admission requirements?

For admission to a HF, you usually need a degree from a minimum of 3 years of basic vocational training with a federal certificate of proficiency (EFZ) or a Fachmittelschulausweis or a gymnasiale Maturität.

In the case of a UAS, on the other hand, in addition to the vocational baccalaureate, specialized baccalaureate or gymnasium baccalaureate, students must be able to demonstrate at least one year of work experience in a related profession. For many colleges of higher education or universities of applied sciences, an aptitude test must also be completed.

Job prospects after further education

After completing your continuing education at a HF, you can take a higher specialist exam at a later date as a specialist expert in infection prevention in healthcare, as a naturopath or as a complementary therapist. However, you can also pursue postgraduate studies and specialize in allied health fields, such as anesthesiology or critical care, and acquire further skills in a challenging field.

With the Bachelor in Nursing, you can work in public healthcare institutions, such as a hospital, as well as in the private sector. You also have the option of taking the Master in Nursing. Here, students deepen their expertise and acquire specialized skills as well as theoretical and scientific knowledge.

Wage as a nursing specialist

The average salary in Switzerland is between 60,000 to 100,000 francs. Of course, this depends on the degree and the industry. If you did your training at a HF, you can expect an average salary of about 5,000 to 5,500 francs a month. With a UAS degree, the average salary is 6,000 to 7,000 francs per month.

Where can I get further training?

If you want to do further education in the field of health at a HF after your training, there are higher technical schools in various cities. For example, in, Basel, Bern, Chur, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Winterthur and Zurich. There are also various education centers in these cities that offer further education in the field of health, for example as a dipl. Expertin / Experte Intensivpflege HF.

The Berner Fachhochschule and the ZHAW each offer a Bachelor of Nursing degree program.

If you have further questions about nursing, you can also contact the SBK. The SBK is the representative professional association of graduate nurses in Switzerland.
