A distinction is made between courses of study at higher vocational schools (HF), the professional examination (BP) as well as the higher professional examination (HFP). According to the federal government, higher vocational education and training is: "...competence- and labor market-oriented; it promotes application-based learning, the rapid implementation of new technical knowledge and a high rate of innovation."</p>.
