L’institut de Formation de la Construction est rattaché à la section genevoise de la Société Suisse des Entrepreneurs, organisation patronale qui représente près de 90% des effectifs du secteur principal de la construction à Genève. Financé par des subventions provenant de l’Office pour l’orientation, la formation professionnelle et continue, de la Fondation pour la Formation Professionnelle et Continue, du Fonds paritaire et du Fonds patronal du Gros-Œuvre, l’institut dispense diverses formations pour les salariés de la construction. Il s’agit de formations initiales (apprentissage), ainsi que de formations continues et de perfectionnement (A32, machinistes et grutiers, élingage, etc.).

Higher vocational education is a further education option in vocational education and training and thus complements the universities, the universities of teacher education and the universities of applied sciences within the Swiss education system. A distinction is made between courses of study at higher vocational schools (HF), the professional examination (BP) as well as the higher professional examination (HFP). According to the federal government, higher vocational education and training is: "...competence- and labor market-oriented; it promotes application-based learning, the rapid implementation of new technical knowledge and a high rate of innovation.".
