Checklist before moving in
Valuable tips for studying
Starting a study means moving out for most of us. Before the move into a shared flat, however, the following should be taken into account:
Shared room or apartment?
Do you want to found a WG with friends? Or move into an existing one? Or rather have your own apartment? Before looking for a shared room or apartment, you should think about which option is best for you. If necessary, ask friends who want to study in the same city as you and are also looking for a suitable accommodation.
Rules & flatmates
Before (!) you decide to found a WG with friends or with flatmates you don't know yet, it is important to clarify whether everyone shares the same idea of the WG life. Discuss which rules must be adhered to, create a possible cleaning plan and decide how the finances are to be regulated. In an existing WG, all these things have already been decided. Make sure that you feel comfortable in the lived WG culture.
Costs & furniture
If you move into an existing WG, there will be (hopefully) no lack of kitchen or bathroom utensils. But if you decide to found a WG, you will quickly realize that a WG needs more than a bed and a desk. In addition to furniture, a whole kitchen or a bathroom may have to be equipped. Make joint decisions about what you need, what you can possibly take from home and how you divide the costs. By the way, costs: You must not forget the ancillary costs, which arise from electricity, water and heating energy consumption. These costs should also be fairly distributed among all flatmates.
Rental contract & acceptance
At the beginning of the discussion about a WG, it should be decided in advance who will be entered as the main tenant in the rental contract. It should also be recorded that all tenants can stay in the apartment if the main tenant moves out prematurely. All tenants should also contribute the same share of the deposit (usually the deposit consists of the first two monthly rents). Also pay attention to the acceptance of the apartment so that you can take over the apartment in the same condition. Take photos of all damages - whether big or small - and document them in a form that you have at hand when you move out.
