Als eigenständiges Institut Unterstrass, das mit der Pädagogischen Hochschule Zürich (PHZH) zusammenarbeitet, setzt es auf überschaubare Strukturen, viel Kontakt zu Kindern und auf engagiertes Mitwirken.
